Tile Mural Project
The class was designed to explore the possibilities of integrating Art and Math
The class was team-taught with Math instructor Donald Hicketheir, PhD
The students designed the mural using tessellations and two Golden Spirals intersecting
Over 400 tiles, most over 24” long
A clay body was designed to withstand extreme freeze-thaw conditions
Students were responsible for all stages of the process – from design, to creating the tiles, to installing the mural

Students with collection of tiles (the largest 24" long); the mural required hundreds of tiles, with each shape having several sizes. The class formulated and tested a special clay body that could withstand the extreme freeze-thaw conditions of Montana.
